The Gibson L-5, introduced in 1922, is one of the most iconic archtop guitars in history, known for its superior craftsmanship and exceptional tonal qualities. By the time Gibson produced this 1939 model, they were well-established as leaders in instrument innovation, and the L-5 had already earned a reputation for its balanced sound and smooth playability. This era, considered one of Gibson’s golden ages, saw the creation of some of their finest instruments, and this L-5 exemplifies that tradition. With its carved spruce top, maple back and sides, and meticulous handcrafting, the guitar remains true to its origins in both tone and build quality, standing the test of time.
In 1939 we saw the introduction of parallel bracing on L-5s, used to support the carved spruce top, with this model incorporating such bracing. Also, 1939 was the year that the blonde/natural finish was introduced, adding to the appeal of this gorgeous guitar.
According to Gibson’s records, we can see that only 152 L-5s were produced in 1939, with only approximately 30% of them being finished in blonde. So, we are looking at roughly 1 of the 45 blonde L-5s crafted in 1939 – quite a rare find indeed.
Other than a repro pickguard, this particular 1939 L-5 is all original, preserving its authentic character. Despite being played over the past 85 years, it shows only minor signs of wear, with light scratches and small nicks that speak to its history of careful use. These marks tell a story—not of neglect, but of a beloved instrument that has been cherished by its owners. Its tonal range is impressive, with a smooth top end that shines with clarity, a punchy midrange that gives the guitar a dynamic presence, and a subtle bass that provides enough warmth for solo performances while remaining subdued enough to blend seamlessly in ensemble settings.
There is a small, professional repair on the side bout where a D'Armond Rhythm Chief pickup was previously installed, a modification that was quite common. The guitar now retains its original acoustic character, with the repair seamlessly integrated into its design.
Accompanying the guitar is its original Lifton hard case, a prized accessory in its own right. The case features distinctive orange racing stripes, adding to the vintage appeal and historical significance of the instrument. Along with the case comes this L-5s original raincoat case cover making this the full package and a collector’s dream.
As much a piece of musical history as a playable masterpiece, this Gibson L-5 remains a testament to Gibson’s legacy of excellence, offering an unmatched combination of beauty, tone, and craftsmanship.
