The big brother of the Vox AC30, the Vox AC50 was designed with one thing in mind – to be heard over the screaming fans of John, Paul, George and Ringo at the height of Beatlemania.
Created as an evolution of the Vox AC30 - designed in 1958, the design process of the AC50 began in early 1963 and was completed later that year. Photographs of the Beatles show the AC50 on stage in December of 1963.
This AC50 was manufactured in 1968. It has a high serial number and is one of the last ones to roll off the JMI line. One speaker is a Celestion dated May 1984 with bare aluminium backing. The other has an anodized blue finish on the magnet. The manufacturer is unknown to us at this time but appears to be of a similar vintage.
“Marshal Killer” is a name that’s been used to describe the AC50. They are LOUD and powerful. They have headroom to spare and are a great alternative to the AC30 and are a great platform for pedals. Interestingly, despite their prowess and capabilities, these amps still command lower prices than the AC30. This is in part due to the separate amp/speaker box configuration. This provides a great opportunity to buy into one of the most iconic amps of the British invasion at an attainable price point.
This amp presents as an honest, road worn example of 60s rock and roll. It has some small cuts and tears in the tolex, and minor pitting on metal surfaces. This is half the reason why we love these old amps. They tell you a story just by looking at them. Nothing is missing from the assembly. All knobs and inputs function as they should. The steel chassis functions well, despite a few small bends from years of use.
This is a great sounding and significant piece of rock and roll history with an attractive price tag.
